LA Insights: Exploring the New Hollywood

The Hollywood neighborhood used to be a seedy and occasionally dangerous backwater, the kind of place where “You better hope you don’t run out of gas,” as Ry Cooder sang in 1979. (Think of where Richard Gere picks up Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman). But in the past 10 years, Hollywood has dramatically transformed into a booming center for L.A. [more...]

Fun Fact Friday: I Scream. You Scream. We All Scream for Ice Cream!

Los Angeles is a great ice cream town. While there are no shortage of Cold Stone Creameries here – in fact, there’s a convenient downtown location at 9th St. and Flower, near the Ralph’s grocery store – there are also numerous homemade or “artisanal” ice cream stores. Flavors from around the world, entrepreneurial moxie, and a genuinely artistic flair make these specialty stores well worth a trip on the subway.. [more...]

Why show your stuff to a few friends, when you can Show Off to thousands of your peers at PDC2008?

Show Off is returning to PDC2008 to give you another chance to... well... show off! Whether you coded it, soldered it, hacked it or sculpted it, if it’s cool and involves technology then we want to see it.

If you’ve ever wanted to put the smack down on lesser mortals, flex your brain, and get everyone to gloat at your—deservedly—awe-inspiring work, this is what might be called a prime opportunity. We want you to inspire others with your unique software, tip, tool, technique, animation, or anything else we can’t think of. All you need to do is create a short, 3-minute-or-less video demonstrating what you want to show off.

If you don't have anything to submit, we still want all PDC2008 attendees to cheer on their peers in recognition of their fantastic work. This is all about excitement, and we’ll have theater-style "food" to keep the energy going. And there will be prizes. Oh yes...fabulous prizes await.

We want to keep it simple, so here are the guidelines:

  • You and/or your team put together a single WMV file that shows off something cool about your application, animation, tool, technique (or whatever).
  • This is a Microsoft hosted conference, so make sure that at least some of our technology was used to create the stuff you’re showing off.
  • Videos are limited to 3 minutes and should not include credits. We’ll add credits to the beginning of each video.
  • If you want to use a screen capture application like Camtasia Studio, HyperCam, or Windows Media Encoder, go for it! We’ll be showing these on a big screen, so please be sure to record at high quality.
  • Be creative. Show something cool that would excite your peers.
  • No crude language, nudity, or commercials.
  • No entries that have been selected as prize winning entries in other contests.

All entries must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time (PT) on October 17, 2008.

If you’d like to submit a video for consideration, click the link at the bottom of this post and send us an e-mail that includes all of the following information (you might want to copy & paste this list to make it easier):

  • Names of people who should receive credit
  • Name of your organization (if any)
  • Contact information (e-mail, URL, etc.)
  • Title of the video
  • The developer and designer tools you used (both Microsoft and non-Microsoft)
  • Short 2-3 sentence description of your video
  • Information about how we can retrieve your video (URL, FTP, etc.)

We look forward to your submission and hope to see everyone at the Show Off event!
